Clones, Drones, & Monotones

CATEGORIES: corporatization, relationships, connections-disconnections

Sitting in Starbucks
Dark brown ceiling
Diarrhea yellow walls
Cold ceramic tile floor
Nondescript jazz wafting beneath drones of noisy chatter.

Burnt coffee beans mistaken for richness
Six kinds of Tazo teas
Corporate signs draping windows
“Clearance…” “Register…”
With clones of corporate coffee, mugs, and French presses.

Two blocks away in Solo Café
Black ceiling
Walls of jazz and blue vinyl
And classic upbeat and beat books
Lenny Bruce, Jack Kerouac, and B. B. King

Crafted coffee
Jars of loose teas
Signs of simplicity and sublimity
Solo readers and writers
And groups in quiet conversation.

Clones, Drones, & Monotones Addendum 2020

Solo Cafe in timeless memory
Now a hair salon.
Starbucks still selling burnt-beans coffee.
